What did Evan Bayh Do?
Rasmussen has released the results of a new poll. It shows that Indiana Senator Evan Bayh – formerly Governor of the same state – is trailing Mike Pence in voter support for the 2010 elections – and Pence hasn’t even thrown his hat into the ring yet!
Bayh won re-election in 2004 with almost 62 percent of the votes, he’s politically moderate and has a reputation as a fiscally conservative Democrat from his governor days where he created the largest tax cut in state history, created a budget surplus and maintained a respectable standard of fiscal responsibility – all good points for a senator campaigning in a recession. So what did he do to fall into vulnerable territory at this critical time in his career?
As far as I can tell, he let himself become associated with Obama.
There aren’t any big scandals in the news. He didn’t have any social gaffes, his policies are as moderate as ever and, outside of supporting Obama, he hasn’t made any waves since 2008 (where he came within a coin toss of becoming Vice President).
Of course, being vulnerable isn’t the same thing as losing, he has the advantage of the incumbency going into the campaign and there are a lot of things that can happen between now and then to change the odds one way or another. The point is, before Obama, his position was as secure as any in the Senate.
Perhaps if he distances himself from the president – you know, like congress tried to do after Bush’s first term…
